Electricity Saving Tips For Summer: The Ultimate Guide

During the summer, you may be wondering how to best save electricity where you can. After all, your heating and cooling system accounts for nearly half of your total energy usage – and your AC will be getting a lot of use over the next few months! Here are some ways you can save electricity while staying cool.

1. Close Blinds, Shades and Curtains

During the day, when your air conditioner is being used and temperature is at its peak, keep blinds, shades and curtains closed. Using shades, curtains, and blinds is a great way to block out the heat from the sun during summer. The sun beaming through your window can really overheat your home – even if you have the AC turned on. This can cause your AC to work even harder, using more electricity and resulting in high energy bills.

2. Use Ceiling Fans

Adjust your ceiling fan to make sure it’s turning counterclockwise. This will help circulate the cool air downward. Using your ceiling fan during summer will help create that wind chill effect. This makes it so you won’t have to use your AC as much, which can help you save on electricity.

3. Unplug Appliances and Tools When Not In Use

Whether your toaster, computer, or outdoor power tools, make sure to turn off all appliances and tools when they’re not in use. You’d be surprised how much energy your appliances and tools can use – even when you’re not using them. If they’re plugged in, they still use electricity.

4. Avoid The Oven and Stove As Much As Possible

Cook outside as much as you can during the summer (hello, BBQ)! If that’s not an option for you, try using your crockpot, toaster, and microwave more as they don’t generate nearly as much heat as your stove or oven does. This added heat can put stress on your AC unit, and cause more energy usage.

5. Keep Lights Turned Off During The Day

If you can comfortable and safely, keep lights turned off during the day – or at least in rooms that aren’t being used. Not only can lights generate heat, causing your AC to work harder, but it can also waste electricity. This may also be a good time to opt for LED lightbulbs if you haven’t already.  LED lights use 75% less energy, can last 25 times longer, and run much cooler than your standard incandescent lights.

6. Keep Windows And Doors Shut During The Day

During the day, it’s best you keep all windows and doors shut – especially in this hot and humid weather. Otherwise, you’re letting in all that humidity and warmth and causing your AC unit to work much harder to cool your home effectively. However, keeping them open at night can actually be effective. Most nights, outdoor temperatures drop and opening the windows can allow for that fresh, cool air to come inside – without increasing electricity usage.
